RITE OF PASSAGE

137cmx320cm | Scanned Pastel drawings on found documents | ongoing project since 2020

The series of work contains photocopies of the documents necessary by foreign students applying to study in Germany, like Reisepässe, visum, Nachweis der Deutschkenntnisse, Krankenversicherung, and Kontoauszüge, among other documentation necessary for various access as a foreign body. Drawings of Self-portraits drawn directly over the pages reveal many aspects of identity according to the German State, the City of Hamburg, and other German or European authorities. The work is an act of institutional critique through self-drawn profiles onto a layer across the surface. In this piece, I explore institutional representation, marginalization, as well as classification through the lens of bureaucracy. It further highlights paper and ink’s ability to serve as proof and validity for access to certain rights and resources, particularly when traveling within Germany. The paper holds much significance in the work as it shows the representation of enforced laws, Rite of Passage echoes the phenomenological blurry lines of law and also vividly expresses the embodiment of bureaucratic sanctuary.
